US Billboards Attack Prayer: Pete Greig Responds

July 17th, 2009

Published: July 7th, 2009

Prayer is pointless! At least, according to a massive billboard campaign launched on 1st July in five American States.

Hot on the heals of the recent atheist bus campaign in London, these new billboards, sponsored  by the American Humanist Association, read: “WANT A BETTER WORLD? Prayer Not Required!” and they’re being erected this month in Washington, D.C., Pennsylvania, South Carolina, Idaho, and Arizona (where churches prayed continually throughout last year). But before we pack up our 24-7 Prayer Rooms, shut down this site and wave goodbye to thousands of years of Judaeo-Christian conviction, let’s just think about this claim a little…

In America the vast majority of people pray – even on the West Coast where, according to Gallup, 25% of the adult population is now either atheist or agnostic. Meanwhile in supposedly secular Europe, 60% of people pray regularly and in London that figure rises to a whopping 73%. These statistics alone eloquently challenge the premise that prayer is a waste of time.

In my book God on Mute, I describe an old Russian Orthodox believer, called Anatoly Emmanuilovich, who was persecuted all his life by the Secret Police. In a letter from prison he testified that: ‘The greatest miracle of all is prayer. I have only to turn my thoughts to God and I suddenly feel a strength which bursts into my soul, into my entire being…. It is not psychotherapy, for where would I, an insignificant, tired old man, get this strength which renews and saves me? It comes from without and there is no force on earth that can even understand it.’

When I read testimonies like this one, I wonder what is achieved by attacking something as wonderful as prayer. Why would anyone spend hundreds of thousands of dollars trying to convert people to the terrible news that we are merely highly evolved animals marooned on a giant rock, spinning meaninglessly in space, doomed to a purposeless existence, without moral consequence and without recourse to any higher power, meaning or hope? Why didn’t they just throw a massive party, or buy millions of mosquito nets for Africa, or install a wall of plasma televisions at every morgue in the country?

The Russian novelist Dostoevsky argued that, ‘without God there is no morality’. Think about it! If there’s no God, there’s no such thing as the ‘better world’ to which the billboard aspires. In purely evolutionary terms, a serial killer is merely proving his supremacy over weaker individuals and asserting his right to dominate the gene pool. And even if there was meaning and morality in a godless universe, unless humanism can change hearts, restore marriages, break addictions, heal painful memories, rewire motivations, erase guilt, inspire great art, and ignite vision the way that Jesus Christ can, its utopian ambitions are naïve to put it mildly.

When it comes to social transformation, atheism’s track record isn’t good. In fact it’s downright terrible. In Cambodia, the atheist dictator Pol Pot killed more than a million of his own people in four years. In Russia, Joseph Stalin was responsible for the deaths of tens of millions – yet he failed entirely to make things better. Meanwhile, Jesus who never hurt anyone and who centered his whole life in prayer, instructing his followers to ‘always pray and not give up’ (Luke 18:1), has changed billions of lives down thousands of years… unquestionably for the better.

As we celebrate the holidays, let’s make the most of moments of leisure to enjoy God’s presence and to re-align ourselves with his plan for a better world. Whether it’s expressed in whispered words of gratitude lying on a sun lounger, or singing our hearts out in a 24-7 Prayer Room, let’s continue to pray like it all depends on God and live like it all depends on us.  Why? Because YES we want a better world but NO we can’t wish it into being, and we can’t think it into being, and we can’t rebrand it into being, and we certainly can’t work it up by trying our hardest to be nicer little ‘humanisms’! The better world we long for cannot be found in the mirror. That’s why we ask Jesus Christ to displace our selfishness and sadness with his unparalleled grace and joy.

The world got a little better when the Roman Empire ended its ritual of human sacrifice, an event that can be traced back to a 24-7 Prayer Room in Jerusalem in AD33. The world got a little better with the abolition of slavery in the British Empire, an event that can be traced back to a 24-7 Prayer Room in South-East Germany in 1727. The world also got a little better with the rise of the American Civil Rights Movement, a great consensus that can be traced back to a 24-7 Prayer Room in Azusa Street, Los Angeles in 1906. Yes we want a better world, and yes, that’s why we pray!

It has been true for millennia that the laboratory for all positive social transformation and spiritual formation has always been the place of persevering prayer. One day, according to our scriptures, even members of the American Humanist Association will join us in confessing Christ, acknowledging that the hinge of history is the bended knee.

Pete Greig is a founding champion of the 24-7 movement and Director of Prayer for Holy Trinity Brompton, in London. He and his family live in Guildford, England, where they are actively engaged with establishing a new missional (‘Boiler Room’) community. Pete’s books include ‘Red Moon Rising’, ‘The Vision and The Vow’ and ‘God on Mute’.

What do you think we should do about this? How should we pray? Let us know your thoughts.

Also mark your calendar. Pete Greig is slated to be back in Arizona as a keynote speaker at PrayerQuake, June 23-25, 2010!

God’s Seal Upon Arizona

July 13th, 2009

Discovery of the Hand of God in the Foundations of Arizona

In March of 2007, while writing God in the Foundations of Arizona Government, I was inspired to look more closely at the Arizona State Seal.  I knew that the official Arizona Motto since territorial days was Ditat Deus, which means in Latin, “God Enriches.”  Deus is Latin for “God” and ditat is the root word “to make rich” or “to enrich.”  I also found a reference where an historian thought the Ditat Deus motto may have been inspired by a passage in Genesis 14.

“And Abram said to the king of Sodom, “I have sworn to the Lord God Most High, possessor of heaven and earth, that I will not take a thread or a sandal thong or anything that is yours, lest you should say, ‘I have made Abram rich.’” – Genesis 14:22-23

If this historian is correct, then based on the clear inference made in Genesis 14, the nobility of the Arizona Motto is significant in declaring that, as Abram did, it is God and God alone who enriches us.

After checking the Latin Vulgate, I found that, in fact, a derivative of the Latin word, ditavi, is used in Genesis 14:23.  Ditat itself only appears once in the Bible—in 1 Samuel 2:7:  “The Lord makes poor and rich (ditat); He brings low, He also exalts.”

I then checked the original Hebrew word common to these Bible verses from which the Latin ditat and ditavi are translated.  The original Hebrew word is “ashar,” which is the primitive root word meaning “to enrich” or “to make rich.”  I then searched the places in the Bible that “ashar” appears.  It occurs 17 times, of which in four cases there is the clear meaning of “God enriches.”  Along with Genesis 14:23 and 1 Samuel 2:7, there is Psalm 65:9 and Proverbs 10:22.

“Thou dost visit the earth, and cause it to overflow; Thou dost greatly enrich (ashar) it; the stream of God is full of water; Thou dost prepare their grain, for thus Thou dost prepare the earth.” – Psalm 65:9

“It is the blessing of the Lord that makes rich, and He adds no sorrow to it.”

– Proverbs 10:22

Together, these four verses add depth to the meaning of our Arizona Motto—what it means to declare that “God enriches.”  He is the One who blesses, provides for, and prospers us without adding sorrow to it!  However, I then discovered something more that would touch me to the core.

It is important to remember that the State Seal is used to validate every state document.  It is placed upon virtually every state government building. While every one of the United States acknowledges God in their Preambles, only eight states, including Arizona, make direct or indirect references to God in their State Mottos and Seals.

Original Arizona Territorial Seal                                      Current Arizona State Seal

At the Constitutional Convention for Statehood of 1910 there was intense debate concerning the legal description of the State Seal for Arizona.  One faction wanted to keep the same legal description from territorial days, while the other adamantly voiced the need for a new image for the emerging state.  In the end, a new legal description for the State Seal was hammered out and voted in.  Of note, there was no debate about keeping the State Motto, Ditat Deus, as part of the Arizona Seal.  In fact, it became more prominent in its visual presentation.

Here is the complete legal language for the new Arizona State Seal:

Article XXII, Section 20:  The seal of the State shall be of the following design:  In the background shall be a range of mountains, with the sun rising behind the peaks thereof, and at the right side of the range of mountains there shall be a storage reservoir and a dam, below which in the middle distance are irrigated fields and orchards reaching into the foreground, at the right of which are cattle grazing.  To the left in the middle distance on a mountain side is a quartz mill in front of which and in the foreground is a miner standing with pick and shovel.  Above this device shall be the motto:  “Ditat Deus.” In a circular band surrounding the whole device shall be inscribed:  “Great Seal of The State of Arizona”, with the year of admission of the State into the Union.

Now, let’s take a closer look at Psalm 65:9, one of the four places where the State Motto, “God enriches” occurs in the Bible, and continue reading through verse 13.

“Thou dost visit the earth, and cause it to overflow; Thou dost greatly enrich it; the stream of God is full of water; Thou dost prepare their grain, for thus Thou dost prepare the earth.  Thou dost water its furrows abundantly; Thou dost settle its ridges; Thou dost soften it with showers; Thou dost bless its growth.  Thou hast crowned the year with Thy bounty, and Thy paths drip with fatness.  The pastures of the wilderness drip, and the hills gird themselves with rejoicing.  The meadows are clothed with flocks, and the valleys are covered with grain; they shout for joy, yes, they sing.” – Psalm 65:9-13

The parallels of Psalm 65:9-13 with the new legal language of the State Seal and resulting artwork, including the Motto, are uncanny!  What are the chances that both the Motto and Seal would be contained in the same Biblical passage?  What are the chances that a group of 52 men from all walks of life in 1910, who were the elected representatives for the State Constitutional Convention, would settle on a legal language for a State Seal that would unconsciously align with a passage in the Psalms?  There was no reference made to the Bible in these discussions.  They did not trace the Latin and Hebrew root words of the State Motto to the passage in Psalm 65 and use that to guide their description for the State Seal.  I have no other explanation except that God already set in His word—even sealed in His word—the State Seal of Arizona.  God has a promise and destiny for Arizona.  He orchestrated men to institute His word into the Motto and Seal and preserve these most important declarations in the Arizona State Constitution.

Further, the time is now for this to be revealed.  God is on the move to restore the foundations of Arizona.  He is informing and uniting intercessors.  God is aligning our government.  He is aligning the Church of Arizona in revelation and wisdom for His purposes.  We are the desert state of our nation, ‘a voice in the desert preparing the way of the Lord.’  God enriches us!

The Word of the Lord to Arizona

July 1st, 2009

Dear Friends,

A big thank you to all who attended the Awake Arizona conference. The speakers were in one accord with their messages. The Lord spoke clearly about the days ahead, sobering times yet with exciting opportunities to extend the kingdom. Our staff is busy transcribing the specific words now and soon you’ll be able to view and comment on them on the blog.

Pastor Terry Crist opened the conference with these words:
We are living in the midst of challenging times…I keep hearing the words of Amos 8:11 over and over:” For the days are coming, says the Lord, when I will send a famine in the land, not a famine of bread, nor of thirst for water, but a famine for hearing the words of the Lord. ” It is a mixed metaphor that the Lord uses there – it’s as if God is saying, “I’m going to leave you to your own devices until you get to the point when you are so desperate to hear from Me that food doesn’t matter and water doesn’t matter. My Word matters more. I really feel that we’re living in the midst of those times.”

In the last few years, I (Cheryl) have heard the Lord say to me many times, “It’s time to prepare for what’s coming so that you can prepare others for what is coming!” I’m going to write the full word the Lord gave me and I’ll be sharing it on the blog in the next few days.

How did the Awake Arizona conference impact you? What is the Lord saying about what we’re to do next individually and corporately? We promise to read every comment and selected ones will be posted.

God bless you,
Hal and Cheryl Sacks

Remarkable Confirmation of Word for Phoenix This Week!

June 19th, 2009

At the Glory of Zion Tuesday morning prayer meeting (June 16) this week, Chuck Pierce delivered this word:

Watch the winds… They will blow in Phoenix, and the awakening wind will contend.

We now have the entire manuscript from the Glory of Zion prayer meeting and it is centered around an awakening wind that is coming. Here is another excerpt from Chuck:

There is a spiritual wind blowing. The Lord says, “I’m releasing it from heaven…it is a sovereign supernatural wind. You have endured the heat of the moment and the season…  It pleases Me to awaken now.  There is an awakening wind of heaven that is coming into an atmosphere that you have been prevailing against. Now My awakening wind is coming in, and My awakening wind will contend…It pleases me to send this wind that will awaken My love within you again.

Hal Sacks had an amazing dream Tuesday morning about 4 am. (Note correction to the email. When Hal reported that his dream was Tuesday, it was actually early morning hours Tuesday rather than that night.)  This is important  because the prayer meeting in Denton, TX. was starting at the same time (4 am Phoenix and 6 am Denton time).

I was standing in our home in Phoenix when an extremely strong wind began to blow. It was the most fierce wind I’ve ever seen. It was so powerful, in fact, I felt our house would be swept right away. Then with these huge gusts of wind were blowing gigantic waves, one right after another much like a strong storm serge. I kept thinking, “We don’t live on the beach, where is all this water coming from?” Then I woke up.

As I contemplated the meaning of the dream, I felt it was for the corporate body of Christ. I believe that as a state we are in a prophetic moment. I’m not sure I understand all that God was saying. However, my initial thoughts, before knowing anything about what happened in the Glory of Zion prayer meeting, were that these are winds of awakening that will begin by blowing away chaff and all the “hay, wood, and stubble” from our lives.  These winds will  reawaken our hearts with devotion to Him. The water will bring cleansing and life to the desert.

Maybe the Lord has been speaking to you as well. Please share with us your prayers for revival and any Scriptures the Lord has given you for Arizona and the nation.

Just days before BridgeBuilders hosts Awake Arizona ‘09, June 25-27, God is clearly speaking to us about this important awakening conference at City of Grace, Mesa. Come join us in prayer for the awakening winds to blow and contend with the winds of adversity.

Revival and Reformation in Arizona

June 17th, 2009

A Vision for Reformation in Arizona

“Spiritual awakening in our day – Reformation in our lifetime!” This is the rallying cry coming from Dutch Sheets and many others, that we cannot sit back and allow America to become a “post-Christian” nation – as some claim it already is – but that we must extend the influence of the Kingdom of God into every arena of society.

Spiritual awakening must result in a transformed society or it is nothing more than flash in the pan. The great revivals of the past shaped their nations, impacted their cultures and shifted the prevailing world view.

What would true awakening and true reformation in Arizona look like?

How would our public schools, our legal system, our businesses, our churches be different?

These aren’t just rhetorical questions or irrelevant spiritual fantasies… they should be a clear and burning vision within us for revival reformation in Arizona, so that we can pray with faith and take action!

I want to invite you to explore what true revival in Arizona would look like, on this blog.

Talk about your city. Tell us about your child’s middle school. Share the vision in your heart for state government. Please feel free to leave your comments below and let’s ask the Lord to give us His vision for our state!

I’ll go first. Arizona spends billions of dollars each year responding to child abuse and neglect. But the cost in shattered young lives is something you can’t put a price on. When true reformation is birthed in Arizona, we’ll see parents whose hearts have been healed and hopeless kids in foster care will be taken into loving Christian homes. A young generation will be rescued.

What are your dreams for revival?

Focus on the Family’s The Truth Project

June 15th, 2009

Hal and I have just completed watching The Truth Project series and it is by far the most enlightening and captivating curriculum we’ve been exposed to in recent years.

This DVD-based small group study is designed to equip believers with a comprehensive biblical worldview. Practically and individually, participants will be reintroduced to the truth claims of God. Twelve one-hour lessons discuss in detail God’s design for living out the Christian worldview in daily life. Most importantly, it addresses the need to marry our actions to our core beliefs. What this curriculum does is nothing short of transformational.

You can be trained to lead a group simply by going through the series as part of a group or by taking a special class. If you would like to be trained to lead a Truth Project small group, Center for Arizona Policy is offering two great opportunities to equip you to be a small group leader.

On June 20th, CAP will be hosting another Truth Project training session in Glendale. On July 11th, they will be hosting another training in Show Low.

You can register online for these events! We highly recommend it!

US/Mexico Border Prayer Testimonies

June 15th, 2009

The stories are rolling in about arrests and breakthroughs at the border in the war on drugs!

This past month has been full of advances in establishing the Mexico-USA Border Prayer Alliance.  Guy Chadwick and I met with key leaders in the Nogales area on March 14, and then on March 22-23, Guy, Cheryl, and I met with Dr. Chuck Pierce and his team of intercessors in San Diego/Tijuana.

We then went on to Mexicali, for a series of powerful prayer meetings with Mexican pastors and leaders to address the escalating border violence. We had a word from the Lord to worship at the borders and declare for the violence to stop.

Just two days later, on March 25, the Associated Press’s article “Mexico Arrests One of Top 37 Named Drug Lords” appeared, telling of the arrest of one of Mexico’s most-wanted drug smugglers, Hector Huerta Rios.

The same day, the Anchorage Daily News reported that Mexican officials tore down more than 35 idols dedicated to the “Death Saint” associated with the drug trade along the border around Laredo, Texas.  They have even posted armed military guards to see that these idols are not rebuilt!

A few days later, on Friday April 3rd, Nine MSN News reported the arrest of Carrillo Leyva, nicknamed “the Lord of the Skies” for sending jetliners full of cocaine to the United States.

PRAY FOR THE BORDER:

Our friend and prayer leader from El Paso Lorraine Huffman wrote:

Go to the site hosted by AP.  This is excellent site to pray over. It has a map showing cities in US that are effected by cartels presence and there is a list by state you can scroll down on the left to see what cities names are listed that have cartel activity.  Also a map of Mexico showing where cartel home bases are and their names.

1) Lay your hands on the map and claim these cartels come to Jesus for salvation…

2) Pray God’s supernatural arrest of members.

3) Peace on the border…strength to the churches on the border to be proactive in prayer…

4) Safety for police..border patrols…sheriff’s offices…..effective means to deal with cartels and issues.

5) God’s protection for President Calderon as he leads the fight against the cartels.

Arizona Budget Crisis

June 15th, 2009

Arizona’s legislature is facing a budget deficit nearing $2 billion for 2009 and $3 billion deficit in 2010.

What will the budget deficits mean for the public schools of Arizona? Or law-enforcement? Or social services and the myriad of other items?

Read an important letter (June 1, 2009) from Governor Brewer about this deficit here:

Prayer Points:

PRAY for Governor Brewer, Senate President Bob Burns and Speaker of the House Kirk Adams as they negotiate the terms of a final budget which must be obtained by June 30.

PRAY for the Arizona government leaders as they conclude the 2009 legislative session this month, that there will be adequate time and godly wisdom given to each of the important bills before our legislature.

PRAY that those bills that are representative of godly values will be signed into law.

The Power to Transform a Society

June 15th, 2009

I want to share something that has really been on my heart for a long time – and that’s the power of the Church to transform society. Many see this as hopeless, a lost cause. Others believe we should focus solely on preaching the gospel and things will take care of themselves.

But I believe that our mandate as the Church extends beyond merely “saving souls” to discipling nations and being “the salt of the earth” and “the light of the world.” We’ve heard these phrases from scriptures so often, but do we really understand what they mean?

What we believe about these scriptures is going to affect how we pray as intercessors and how we strategize and allocate resources as leaders.

Salt is essential for life and every cell in our bodies contains it. Without salt an animal or human will die and the importance of salt to any civilization cannot be underestimated.

The power to monopolize and control a population’s salt supply, was power over life and death in ancient times. Access to salt supplies started wars! Nations rose and fell based on salt. Historians say that Rome didn’t really fall – it slowly moved – to Byzantium in Turkey, to be closer to the salt supply.

Romans concentrated their military infrastructure near salt sources, or on salt routes. In South American, when the Spanish took over the salt resources, in a fell swoop, they took control of that part of the continent.

Did you know that salt was so important that the words for ‘war’ and ‘peace’ originate from the word for salt & bread in Ancient Hebrew and Arabic?

Salt was a very valuable commodity and was sometimes used as currency. The word “salary” comes from the Roman times, when soldiers were paid in salt.

The buying and selling of salt became one of the most important trading activities in the world. In ancient Greece slaves could be exchanged for salt, which is where the saying comes from, “not worth his salt.”

Matthew 5:13-16

13 You are the salt of the earth. But if the salt loses its saltiness, how can it be made salty again? It is no longer good for anything, except to be thrown out and trampled by men.

14 You are the light of the world. A city on a hill cannot be hidden.

15 Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a bowl. Instead they put it on its stand, and it gives light to everyone in the house.

16 In the same way, let your light shine before men, that they may see your good deeds and praise your Father in heaven

We often act as if we’re called to be the “salt and light of the Church” instead of the “salt of the EARTH and the light of the WORLD!”

Jesus gives a very sober warning to us about what happens if we lose our “saltiness,” our effectiveness and impact in the world around us – we are trampled underfoot.

Verse 16 makes it clear that the way to maintain our light and our saltiness is to do good deeds, out there, in the real world – in our neighborhoods, our school boards, our city councils, our businesses, our hospitals and universities.

Jesus doesn’t say that we’re to try and be “like” salt. He says that we ARE salt!

This makes a huge difference in our thinking. Instead of timidly hoping that we can impact our world, we need to embrace what has already been deposited within us!

Jesus has already granted us the very attributes, powers and qualities of salt.

1.For thousands of years, salt was the most important disinfectant. It can prevent infections in wounds and stop food from rotting. Jesus is saying that we have both the power and the responsibility to prevent the spread of moral decay and wickedness in our world. It is in our nature to do so!

2.Salt is one of the most useful substances on earth. In fact, it was over 14,000 documented uses! Joseph was sent to Pharaoh to solve an agricultural and economic crisis in very practical ways. Like we can get answers from heaven for the practical problems facing every aspect of society. If we fail to be useful, if we fail to be bring answers to the world, we surely risk losing our saltiness!

3.Salt is found in blood, sweat and tears. We need to roll up our sleeves and get to work with a servant’s heart in our communities …and we need to fall on our knees like Jesus in Gethsemane and do that which only the Church can: the hidden, but critical work of the intercessor.

When was the last time we wept in intercession and sweated in prayer for our cities and families and governmental leaders?

It seems to me that being “salty” comes down to a PROPHETIC mandate to preach righteousness, a PRACTICAL mandate of service and a PRAYER mandate.

I’d love to hear your thoughts in the comments section!
